Descripción

QuakeFinder is a private company located in Palo Alto, CA conducting pioneering research in the area of earthquake forecasting. Conceived in 2000 as an education outreach concept by the successful aerospace engineering services company Stellar Solutions, QuakeFinder’s goal firmly developed into a broader vision—to save lives by conducting research with the aim to make global forecasts of seismic activity a reality in order to provide communities, within the next decade, with early warnings of potentially destructive earthquakes.

International Real-time Magnetic Observatory Network

The National Geophysical Data Center

Descripción

The National Geophysical Data Center maintains archives of geomagnetic data to further the understanding of Earth magnetism and the Sun-Earth environment. Data at NGDC include surface, ocean, airborne and satellite measurements, as well as models of the main field and its secular change, and models of the Space - Earth environment.

Proporcionar información rápida y confiable sobre el origen y características de los fenómenos sísmicos en el territorio colombiano.

Objetivos Específicos

Investigar las causas y los procesos que originan los terremotos, e identificar las zonas sismogénicas.
Estudiar la propagación de ondas sísmicas, su atenuación al transmitirse y el comportamiento de rocas y suelos bajo esfuerzos generados.
Consolidar una adecuada base de datos, desarrollar y apoyar los estudios de amenaza sísmica, de actualización del Código Colombiano de Construcciones Sismorresistentes y de microzonificación sísmica en las ciudades.
Actualizar redes de instrumentos para investigación y monitoreo.

Geoportal de Colombia

Descripción

La ICDE está definida como el conjunto de políticas, organizaciones, estándares y tecnologías que trabajan conjuntamente para producir, compartir y usar información geográfica necesaria para soportar el desarrollo del País.

Esta infraestructura permite acceder mediante redes distribuidas a información espacial de diversas fuentes ubicadas en diferentes entidades.

Desde el punto de vista organizacional, la ICDE no es una entidad, sino un conjunto de estrategias articuladas alrededor de las principales instituciones productoras y usuarias que suman esfuerzos para orientar estratégicamente el flujo de la información geográfica del país, con el fin de que apoye de manera oportuna y con calidad a los procesos de toma de decisiones.

El Instituto Geográfico Agustín Codazzi, IGAC, es la entidad encargada de producir el mapa oficial y la cartografía básica de Colombia; elaborar el catastro nacional de la propiedad inmueble; realizar el inventario de las características de los suelos; adelantar investigaciones geográficas como apoyo al desarrollo territorial; capacitar y formar profesionales en tecnologías de información geográfica y coordinar la Infraestructura Colombiana de Datos Espaciales (ICDE).

Instituto Colombiano de Geología y Minería “INGEOMINAS”

Mediante el Decreto 252 del 28 de enero y Decreto 3577 del 29 de octubre de 2004, se reestructuró el “INGEOMINAS” consagrando que la entidad en lo sucesivo se denominará Instituto Colombiano de Geología y Minería “INGEOMINAS” y que tendrá como objeto “..., promover la exploración y explotación de los recursos mineros de la Nación y participar, por delegación, en las actividades relacionadas con la administración de dichos recursos”

The World Magnetic Model

Descripción

The World Magnetic Model is a product of the United States National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). The U.S. National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) and the British Geological Survey (BGS) produced the WMM with funding provided by NGA in the USA and by the Defence Geographic Imagery and Intelligence Agency (DGIA) in the UK.

The World Magnetic Model is the standard model of the US Department of Defense, the UK Ministry of Defence, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and the World Hydrographic Office (WHO) navigation and attitude/heading referencing systems. It is also used widely in civilian navigation systems. The model, associated software, and documentation are distributed by NGDC on behalf of NGA. The model is produced at 5-year intervals, with the current model expiring on December 31, 2009.

The International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA)

Descripción

The International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA) released the 10 ^th Generation International Geomagnetic Reference Field – the latest version of a standard mathematical description of the Earth's main magnetic field and used widely in studies of the Earth's deep interior, its crust and its ionosphere and magnetosphere. The coefficients for this degree and order 13 main field model were finalized by a task force of IAGA in January 2005. The IGRF is the product of a collaborative effort between magnetic field modellers and the institutes involved in collecting and disseminating magnetic field data from satellites and from observatories and surveys around the world.

Crystal Lake Observatory

Descripción

Geomagnetic observatories are the locations where the flux is being measured by one or more magnetometers. The observatory consists of at least one Mag-02 magentometer, a PC and optionally an internet connection.

All observatories are named using a three letter country code and a three letter city code. The country code is derived from the ITU tables:

The station owner usually defines the three letter city code by locating the closest airport and using their three letter airport code, but this is not mandatory.
